Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS) is caused by pressure exerted on the median nerve at the wrist. The passageway or tunnel in which the nerves, tendons, blood and soft tissue run through is rigid, with a defined space that is unable to enlarge. Swelling of any of the tissues in this area can cause compression of the median nerve. This swelling has no place to expand because it is encircled by bones and ligaments. Pressure builds in the tunnel leading to compression of the median nerve and obstruction of blood flow that retards healing and causes further cell degeneration. When this happens, carpal tunnel symptoms begin to present themselves. Classic CTS symptoms are tingling and numbness in the thumb, index and middle finger, aching in the forearm which can radiate to the shoulder and clumsiness or weak grip. CTS is most commonly found in people who perform excessive repetitive tasks, such as data entry typists, carpenters, laboratory technicians etc. Other reasons for this swelling are from injury, friction, fractures, fluid retention, forceful movements and infection. Women between the ages of 40 and 60 appear to be prime candidates for developing CTS. Deficiency of certain essential nutrients may be responsible for some cases of CTS.
