In the body, pregnenolone is metabolized from cholesterol by the cytochrome P450 enzyme. It serves as a parent hormone for all adrenal cortical steroids, including progesterone, testosterone, dehydroepiandrosterone, dihydrotestosterone, aldosterone, cortisol and estradiol.
