It must survive 9 months of drought each year, and to do so produces a very deep root with one or two sets of potato-like tubers which store water and nutrients. Devil's Claw (Harpagophytum procumbens) contains ahrpagoside, harpagide, and procumbide, from the iridoid glycoside family.
