Each packet of VSL#3 contains at least 450 billion live probiotic "good" bacteria. The actual bacteria count at packaging is slightly higher to account for a percentage of bacteria loss that may occur during shipping and storage. The live bacteria in VSL#3 will survive in a variety of environment condition, including exposure to gastric fluids and normal body temperature (98°F). For the purposes of long term storage our stability data suggest that the highest possible potency of VSl#3 is maintained when the product is refrigerated (39-46°F)
Extended exposure to high heat will cause the live lactic acid bacteria to slowly become inactive. However, the product may be exposes to normal ambient temperatures for up to a week without adversely affecting potency. For long term storage, please refrigerate.
VSL#3 is shipped with ice packs to maintain temp at or below (27°C/80°F). Depending on ambient temperature and shipping conditions your product may arrive at or around room temperature. As long as the product is not hot or exposed to heat for extended periods of time (more than one week), it will maintain full potency.
